Pawley's Island to St. James Plantation (near Southport NC)

Rainy, hazy start to day

Commercial traffic

and dredges

 March 13, 2021

This stretch includes Lockwood's Folly and Shallotte Inlet, two notoriously shallow spots.  Both will be dredged shortly after our transit.  The dredge was staged to get started.  Somehow we ended up hitting both spots at dead low, but managed not to hit bottom.  It was close as depth finder stopped reading any depth under the boat.

early start and not many pictures today

staging dredge

Socastee Swing Bridge is the first minor obstacle followed by the rock pile.  The rock pile requires you to not get off too far to the sides of a very narrow channel.  AIS receiver/transmitter is very helpful to alert others of a vessel that may be restricted in channel.  Long stretch of slow going near Myrtle Beach with homes lining the narrow channel.

Interesting toys

We left the marina at 7:15, we have to get by numerous famous shallow areas, one of which we found out they are currently setting up to dredge which will make it more interesting.  We also have several bridges that we will have to request to open.

This is a 79 mile day.  Left at 7:15 and arrived at 2:15.  The day ended sunny and warm.  North of Socastee Swing bring was mostly slow going until Saint James.
